Rape Suspect Arrested

Police say they have captured a rapist in Greenville. According to investigators, David Earl Weldon strangled, raped, and robbed a 47-year-old woman June 21 while she was walking on West 14th Street near Clark Street. Police arrested Weldon on Monday. He is charged with second degree rape and assault. A judge set his bail at $2 million.

Rash of Break-Ins

A rash of residential and business break-ins have kept New Bern police busy over the past few weeks. Just this month, an 87-year-old woman's home was broken into. She says her walker banged against the door, and kept the burglars from getting in. Authorities say there are a few easy tips to make sure you do not become a target. New Bern police say to make sure your home is well lit, use dead bolt locks, and never announce if you are leaving your home for a long period of time. Also, use timed lights so that it appears someone is always home. Business owners are encouraged to contact the New Bern Police Department for business-specific surveys that help identify security issues with commercial buildings.
